Many new or young Christians often ask this question: what do I say in Christian prayer? They have given their lives to Jesus Christ, and want to know how to pray to God correctly. If you are a new Christian convert, knowing the best way to pray will help you grow your relationship with God. Prayer is essential in our journey of knowing God, walking with Jesus and making heaven at last
What is Christian Prayer?
Christian prayer is the communication you have with the God of the Bible. This God is the same One who created the world and sent Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Prayer connects you with God and helps know Him better. Praying and studying the Holy Bible helps you grow into a strong and faithful Christian.
When you pray, believe that God hears you and has the ability to answer. Since He could create the heavens and the earth, there is nothing good He cannot do for you. If He sustains the earth by His power, He can supply you with grace to become a true child of God. So when you pray, believe that God can answer your prayers exactly as you pray them.
What Do You Say In Christian Prayer?
Although prayer is a conversation with God, you need to know the right words for starting prayer. Jesus Christ taught us how to pray correctly to God. Christian prayer follows the example of the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4.
Let’s use the example Jesus gave in Matthew gospel:
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” – Matthew 6:9-13 KJV
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name
Begin all your prayers with “Our Father, My Father, Dear Lord, Oh God, Father in Heaven” or any biblical titles for God you want to use. After that, praise Him for all He did for you and others around you. Pray from your heart and don’t try to copy the exact words of the Lord’s Prayer.
Thy kingdom come
Secondly, pray for God’s kingdom to come and dwell in the hearts of all people, especially those who are still nonbelievers. The kingdom of God is the blessings of salvation and knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. God wants to save everyone, including atheists and those practicing other religions. Pray this part with all your heart. God loves such prayers because they express His plans and glorify His name.
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven
Thirdly, many people, including weak believers, need grace to boldly do the will of God. Ask God to give you grace to do His will. Also tell Him to help all Christians to fully live according to the will of God. When all believers find courage to do the right things everywhere and all the time, the gospel will spread faster. The world will know Jesus, and God’s will be brighter fulfilled.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Fourth, you need food and other basic things in life. Identify all the things you need in your life, family, church, neighborhood and ask God to supply those needs. Don’t feel like you’re materialistic for asking for food, water, shelter or clothing. Jesus Christ Himself gave us this example. So you are obeying God’s word when you pray for daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors
Fifth, ask God to forgive you of all your sins, mistakes and human faults. Remember that we all are not qualified to stand before God. Jesus Christ is our qualification, so we must stay humble and have faith only in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Before you ask for forgiveness, make sure you also practice it when other people offend you.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
Sixth, pray to God to send His Holy Spirit to guide and lead you away from temptations. As humans, you will face temptations that will try to steal your salvation. Tell God to help you overcome them all no matter how strong or secret they are. Also tell God to save you when evil things try to destroy your relationship with God or other people. When you pray like this, God will do it.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen
Lastly, give God the glory by faith for His willingness and ability to answer all your prayers. Praise and worship Him once again from the bottom of your heart. Thank Him and end the prayer with “in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.”
This is how to pray correctly to God and He will answer. As a young Christian, it is important that you lay a good foundation for your relationship with God. You can achieve that by praying according to the pattern of the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus is the Son of God and knows the mind of God more than anyone else. If He gives us an example of what to say in Christian prayer, He knows what He’s doing.
God the Father answers prayers that are according to His will. If we follow the prayer pattern of Jesus, we will prevail in prayer. God will notice our divine communication, and bestow Hiw blessings on our daily prayers.
